Joseph Wilburn Smith was born December 21, 1844 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina and died February 3, 1925 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas. He was the son of John Smith and Mary Ellen Shinn. He married Martha Ann "Mattie" Magee March 18, 1869 in Panola County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of James Magee and Edna Ann Dawson. They are both buried in Lockhart Municipal Burial Park, Caldwell County, Texas.
