Love Joy Methodist Church Cemetery

Panola County, Mississippi

The Love Joy Methodist Church Cemetery is located off Pope Water Valley Road in Panola County, Mississippi. The church was established in 1884 when James Edward "Squire" McCullar donated two acres of land to the Methodist Episcopal Church South on January 10, 1884. The church was named Love Joy Methodist Church and was the church home for families in the community for about 80 years. After it ceased using the facilities for regular worship in the 1960's, the United Methodist Church deeded the building to the Love Joy Cemetery Association. This association maintains the building and grounds year-round.

To get to this cemetery from Interstate 55, take Exit #243. Take MS Highway 6 east for seven and one-half miles. Turn right onto MS Highway 315 and drive eight miles. Turn right on Pope Water Valley Road. Drive a short distance until you see a left turn marked with a small Love Joy sign. Follow the drive to the cemetery and church.


On June 19, 2005 Howard Baulch took photos of selected tombstones, i.e., those he thought may be related to the McCullar family. Howard's wife, Sally Carol Bateman, is related to the McCullars buried here through her fourth great-grandmother, Rosanna McCullar. The transcription is listed below. Comments in parentheses are not on the tombstone and are additional information offered by the author.

Note: I took digital photos of these tombstones and did transcriptions from digital enhancements of each. Nevertheless, I was unable to decipher four tombstones entirely and portions of other tombstones.
