Descendants of Nicholas Stone
Generation No. 1
1. NICHOLAS1 STONE (STEPHENA, WILLIAMB, JOHNC, RICHARDD, NICHOLASE) was born January 1788 in Hanover Co., VA, and died November 15, 1857 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN. He married ELIZABETH LOVING February 24, 1808 in Sumner Co., TN, daughter of HENRY LOVING and ? TURNER. She was born 1792 in Sumner Co., NC (not yet TN), and died September 28, 1858 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN.
Notes for NICHOLAS STONE:
The Stone Family Ancestry published by Maxine Arnold Stone in 1972 incorrectly lists Nicholas Stone as William Nicholas Stone.
1850 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Seventh Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Microfilm M432, Roll 897, District 11, Microfilm Page number 282, Household number 80 lists Nicholas at an age of 63, putting his birth year about 1787 versus the year 1778 that was listed in the Stone Family Ancestry by Maxine Arnold Stone in 1972. Nicholas is listed as a Farmer in this census with property of 6500 (acres?), born in VA. The family is listed as follows:
Name Age Sex
Stone, Nicholas 62 M
Stone, Elizabeth 57 F
Stone, William 24 M
Stone, Fountain 22 M
Stone, Howard 20 M
Stone, Matilda 18 F
Stone, Alexander 16 M
Stone, James F. 13 M
Sumner County, Tennessee Court Records list Nicholas Stone marrying Betsey Loving February 24, 1808 with bondsman being Eusebius Stone.
According to D La Pierre Ballard at http://balcro.com/stone.html, On 10-NOV-1857 in Sumner Co, Tennessee just north of Gallatin, Nicholas Stone made out his will. He had been born in Hanover Co, Virginia in late 1787 and was only to live another five days. He was living on the land his father, Stephen Stone,Sr, had bought in 1803 when the Stone family had moved to Sumner Co, Tennessee from Virginia. A portion of the will of Nicholas Stone is as follows.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do hereby transfer and convey to my son James Thomas Stone my negro woman Harrell[?] and negro boy Bill and all of my ... and kitchen furniture not otherwise disposed of by this conveyance. I do likewise hereby transfer and convey to my sons Alexander G. and James Thomas all my farming tools, stock of horses, cattle, hogs and sheep. I do likewise transfer and convey to my son Nicholas Howard Stone my negro girl by the name of Mary. I also transfer and convey unto my sons, Stephen, Joseph H., Francis A., William M., Nicholas H., and my daughters, Mary Brazier, Sophia Baulch, Lucinda Stone, Keziah A. Jernigan and Sarah M. Duke each two hundred acres of land in the state of Texas, Kaufman County to be ... off to them out of a tract of land I bought of R. D. Woods said to contain about twenty-three hundred acres.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Francis A. Stone was the son of Nicholas Stone and the grandson of Stephen Stone,Sr. Francis moved to Kaufman Co, Texas about 1855 with his wife Elizabeth A. G. Spradlin Stone and their children Rufus, Cornelia and Eusebius. They had moved to Indiana from Sumner Co, Tennessee and had lived a few years there before they moved to Texas. A number of the Spradlins who were his wife's relatives had moved to Indiana and then to Kaufman Co, Texas also.
Francis, who went by the name Frank, was a very careful farmer and rancher so that he began buying land near his own land in far eastern Kaufman County. The land sales to him record that he always paid in gold. Eventually his Stone Ranch totalled six thousand acres.
Frank and Elizabeth had three children: Rufus Asbury Stone, Cornelia A. Stone and Eusebius Edward Stone. Rufus served the Confederacy in the 20th Texas Cavalry and died at age eighteen while stationed in Ft. Smith, Arkansas in 1863. He is buried there. In December 1864 Cornelia rode by horseback over to a nearby town to get the mail with the hope that she had a letter from her sweetheart who was in Confederate service. She took pneumonia and died just before Christmas. It is believed that Frank Stone himself served the Confederacy possibly in the 3rd Texas Cavalry.
The Stone Ranch had the shape of a backwards letter "L" with the angle corner pointing downward. The right part of the backward "L" extended over into Van-Zandt Co, Texas.
In 1882 Frank Stone died leaving the entire ranch to his his son, Eusebius Edward Stone. Frank had remarried after Elizabeth died in 1880. It is believed that his new wife may have been Ada Samantha Clay Root who was born in Arkansas in 1844 and who lived in nearby Van-Zandt County.
Ada was a widow who had married Charles S. Root in 1866 and had a son born in 1868 named Charles W. Root. After Frank died she married J. T. Russell in 1883. Ada was expecting a child when Frank died. Sadly the child, Frances A. Stone, lived only three months.
Frank's only heir Eusebius Edward Stone married Mary Raines Waites about 1872. Of their four children only Cordelia Elizabeth Stone lived beyond infancy. Eusebius or Sibbey as he was called died tragically from appendicitis in 1884 leaving the ranch to his daughter and only heir, Cordelia Elizabeth Stone, who was just eight years old. Cordelia was sent to Dallas where she received a very fine education. She attended Ursuline Academy, a very prestigious and expensive finishing school which is still in business today.
Cordelia met and married a well educated man named Patrick Henry Hottinger in 1893. He went by the name of Harry and had attended Texas A and M. The ranch was called the Hottinger Ranch at this time. Very tragically Harry died from an accident which occurred while he was hunting geese in 1904. This left Cordelia at age twenty-eight a widow with three small children and another on the way.
Cordelia's mother, Mary Rains Waites Stone, married a man named Earnest M. Stone in 1885. Since Earnest was born in Iowa and both his parents were born in England it is evident that he was not a relative. About 1904 Earnest M. Stone got into trouble with the law regarding whether or not he had forcefully taken advantage of a lady. He was Cordelia's step-father. Cordelia, who had just lost her husband and had recently given birth, was doubtlessly under great distress. She sold the Stone Ranch to pay the lawyers who managed to get her step-father Earnest M. Stone acquitted from the serious charges against him.
With money left over from the sale of the Stone Ranch and from the lawyers fees, Cordelia bought a city block in Dallas and lived in a house on it. This city block now has the Southland Life Building, a major Dallas skyscraper, on it. Cordelia married John Middleton Lee in 1906 and A. D. Pringle in 1922. Her fortunes continued to decline until her death in 1960. On her tombstone she has her last name as Lee.
To get to the Stone Ranch Cemetery drive on U.S. Highway 80 east from Terrell, Texas for eight miles to Cobbs Church on the south side. Then turn south on the black top road and go to the Borheim Quarry Road. Then turn left on that road and proceed. Stop at the truck weigh station to ask for permission and directions. The quarry is on the original Stone Ranch as is also the Stone Ranch Cemetery.
Research by Jack Baker Shepherd has shown that the original purchase of land in Kaufman Co, Texas by Nicholas Stone on 22-SEP-1852 from Reuben D. Wood amounted to 1918 acres for the price of $377.00 which was paid at the time in Sumner Co, TN. Reuben Wood is listed on the 1850 Census in San-Augustine Co, Texas as a farmer born in Tennessee about 1811. The land description in the original bill of sale matches land which later was part of the Stone Ranch.

Notes for MARIAH WALLACE:
Her obituary was recorded on Thursday, January 13, 1910, as follows:
"Another Good Woman Gone
Mrs. Maria Brazier died at her home on the Douglass Pike, Monday morning, Jan. 3rd at 4:30 o'clock. She was seventy-three years of age and was married to Mr. Green Brazier Mar. 9, 1862. To this union there were no children. Aunt Maria, as she was more generally known, professed religion at Old Salem Church about 1870 and united with the Methodist Church immediately after her conversion. She lived a pure consistent Christian life afterward. We read in the Bible that "whom God loveth he chasteneth." This being true Aunt Maria was surely one of God's loved ones. She had been an invalid for twenty-five or thirty years, not leaving her home but once or twice in that length of time and then to visit an invalid sister. During all these years she was hardly able to wait on herself yet she bore her afflictions like a heroine, being cheerful at all times and submissive to her Lord's will, knowing that "He doeth all things well." In Aunt Maria's death the community loses one of it best and noblest women but our loss is Heaven's gain. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved husband who has been so good and patient with her all these years. The burial took place at the Stone Burying ground in the presence of a concourse of friends and relatives, services conducted by her pastor J. D. Robbins. A Friend."

Notes for JOHN R. BALCH:
There is no Balch or Baulch listed in the 1830 Census of Sumner County, so it is presumed that John moved to Sumner County, Tennessee between that census taking and January 17, 1833 when he was licensed to marry Sophia Stone.
From the Sumner County, Tennessee Court records,
"State of Tennessee, Sumner County, SS.

Or to any Justice of the Peace for said County -- GREETING --
By virtue of the full power and authority in me vested,

Free While Females: one under age 5, one age 5-10, one age 10-15, one age 30-40 (this would be Sophia and daughters Mary Catherine and Elizabeth F., although both daughters were between 5-10 at the time of the census; it is not known who the person age 10-15 might have been)
No Free Colored Persons recorded; No Slaves recorded.
1850 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Seventh Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Microfilm M432, Roll 897, District 11, Page 280 lists John as the head of household number 44 as follows:

Balch, Alfred, 11, M
Balch, Elizabeth, 9, F
Balch, Martha, 7, F
Balch, Nancy, 5, F
Balch, John, 1, M
Note: The ages for Susan Eliza, Martha, and Nancy appear incorrect in this census. According to later census data and the John R. Baulch Family Bible, at this point in time, they were 5, 3, and 2, respectively.
1860 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Eighth Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Civil District 10, lists household 99 as follows:

1870 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Ninth Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Civil District 11, page 728 lists House # 106-106 as follows:

Baulch, Sophia, 55, Tenn
Baulch, Nancy, 21, Tenn
Baulch, Susan, 19, Tenn
Baulch, Jane, 18, Tenn
Baulch, Joseph, 14, Tenn
Hickison, Robert, 8, Tenn
Note: The age for Susan appears incorrect in this census. She would have been 25 at this time. Robert Higgason (misspelled as Hickison in the 1870 Census) came to live with the Baulch family some time after his father, John W. Higgason, was killed in the Civil War in 1864. Siblings Sarah and Fountain were taken in by the William Nicholas Baulch family (household 108). Son Alfred is recorded in household 107.
The 1878 map of District 9 (Gallatin and areas northwest) identifies the properties of J. Baulch (John Baulch) and A. Baulch (Alfred Baulch) on Douglass Pike.
1880 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Tenth Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Rolls 1202, Page 133, as recorded by W. C. Dobbins, "Page No. 12, Supervisor's District 3, Enumeration District 215, Inhabitants in 9th civil district in the County of Sumner, State of Tenn enumerated by me on the 9th day of June, 1880." Information was recorded as to Name; Race/Sex; Age; Relationship to Head of Household; Single/Married/Widowed/Divorced; Occupation; Birthplace; Father's Birthplace; and Mother's Birthplace as follows:
Balch, John; W; M; 70; ; M; Farmer; Tenn; Scotland; Ireland.
Balch, Suffia; W; F; 66; wife; M; Keeping (house); Tenn; Va; Tenn.
Balch, Susus E.; W; F; 30; daughter; S; ; Tenn; Tenn; Tenn.
Balch, Joseph A.; W; M; 25; son; S; farm hand; Tenn; Tenn; Tenn.
Lindsay, Jane; W; F; 35; aunt; M; ; Tenn; Tenn; Tenn.
Lindsay, John F.; W; M; 3; grandson; S; ; Tenn; Tenn; Tenn.
Lindsay, Fannie A.; W; F; 2; grandaughter; S; ; Tenn; Tenn; Tenn.
Of note, regarding the aforementioned census information is the following:
1) John Balch listed his birthplace state as Tennessee; family legend led us to believe that he was from Kentucky; in this same census, Alfred Balch listed his father, John's, birthplace state as Kentucky.
2) Suffia Balch is Sophia Stone Balch; the phonetic spelling reinforces the presumption that many census takers were uneducated.
3) Susus E. Balch is Susan E. Balch. In this census her health condition is listed as "paralized."
4) Jane Lindsay is Matilda Jane Balch Lindsay. Her husband, William H. LIndsay, is not listed in the 1880 Census for Sumner County, but Jane Lindsay listed her marital status as "Married" and not "Widowed" or "Divorced".
5) The ages of Susan and Matilda Jane are reversed.
The following information is transcribed from a letter of Jessie Nimmo Hunter, passed from James Homer Baulch to Howard Stone Baulch, regarding the spelling of Baulch: "All of Grandpa's [William Nicholas Baulch] records in Sumner County (deeds to land, etc.), the name was spelled B A L C H. You may recall that Uncle Alfred spelled his name 'Balch.' We thought, of course, that he was the one who was 'out of step.' Also, all my references were for this spelling. I am positive that, though I've never found why, Grandpa changed it about 1830 and the original spelling is correct. ... Since the only folk story repeated about the Balch family was that the John Balch who came to Sumner County when he had run away from home was that his sister had lost her wedding dress when crossing the Green River. I thought this would be easy [to research] but that river crosses up and down and across Kentucky from one end to the other."
D La Pierre Ballard (a fourth cousin, a fifth cousin, a double fifth cousin, twice a double fourth cousin once removed, and a quadruple fifth cousin of Howard Stone Baulch), who has done much research and gathered much information on the Stone and Baulch families, offers another perspective on the Balch name: "Before 1850 names were as they were pronounced and any reasonable spelling was all right. Undoubtedly, Balch was the original, but Baulch was adopted to keep the 'ah' or 'au' sound rather than to let the 'a' go to the 'a' as in apple. My name Ballard did not have its spelling changed because the 'a' as in apple did not make it awkward to say. The early pronunciation of Ballard had the 'a' as in ball. You can see this if you see the movie, 'Mrs. Miniver', incidentally. In England, Ballard has the 'a' as in ball rather than the 'a' as in apple as it does here in America. The 'au' in Baulch is pronounced as the 'au' as in author."
Lastly, I offer the perspective of Gene Edward Balch. Gene is a 12th generation descendant of John Balch (1631-1690) who settled in Lord Baltimore's Maryland Colony in 1658. Gene has researched the Balch family for over thirty years. He believes "that John R. Balch may be one and the same as young John Balch, son of William & Rebecca, of Sparta, Tennessee. This John Balch disappeared from the campsite during a trip with his two brothers and his mother, in about 1827-1828." He could be correct, but I have not supported this assertion, because William & Rebecca Balch of Sparta, Tn were born in Maryland and North Carolina, not in Scotland and Ireland as John R. Balch reported for the 1880 Census. Furthermore, the family legend is that John and his sister had run away from home. There is no mention of a sister disappearing from the campsite.

Nonetheless, the census gives an age of 9 putting her birth date about 1841, not 1844.
In the 1880 Census she is living with her parents. As her tombstone is enscribed "Susan E. Baulch", it is presumed that she never married.

6. FRANCIS A.2 STONE (NICHOLAS1, STEPHENA, WILLIAMB, JOHNC, RICHARDD, NICHOLASE) was born July 03, 1822 in Sumner Co., TN, and died January 03, 1882 in Stone Ranch, Kaufman Co, TX. He married (1) ELIZABETH A. G. SPRADLIN December 19, 1843 in Sumner Co., TN. She was born February 10, 1818 in TN, and died April 27, 1880 in Stone Ranch, Kaufman Co, TX. He married (2) ADA SAMANTHA CLAY ROOT Aft. 1880. She was born 1844.
Notes for FRANCIS A. STONE:

According to D La Pierre Ballard at http://balcro.com/stone.html, the following letter was included in lawsuit 8501 in the loose records of the Sumner County Archives. This letter was written by Nicholas Howard Stone of Sumner Co, Tennessee to his brother Joseph Henry Stone who was living at the time in Kentucky Town, Grayson Co, Texas. The letter was dated 03-DEC-1859 which was less than a month after one of their sisters and one of their brothers had died.
While the spelling and the grammar have been greatly improved to make this letter readable, the wording has been left untouched to retain the favor of the original. Most of the persons mentioned were brothers or sisters of Nicholas Howard Stone and were children of Nicholas Stone and his wife Elizabeth Loving Stone.
Here is a list of most of the persons mentioned in the letter plus the other siblings of Nicholas Howard Stone. The name in
quotes is the person's name as they were referenced in this letter.
Nicholas Stone "Father" (1787-1857)
Elizabeth Loving Stone "Mother" (1792-1858)
Stephen Stone "Stephen" (1811-1867)
Mary S. Stone Brazier "Polly" (1812-1859)
Zachariah Brazier "Polly's husband" (1812-1846)
Sophia Stone Baulch "Sophy" (1814-1885)
Frankey Stone "Frankey" (1816-1835)
Keziah Anne Stone Jernigan "Cuza" (1824-1863)
Lucinda Stone (1818-1875)
Joseph Henry Stone "Joseph" (1820-1895)
Francis A. Stone "Frank" (1822-1882)
William M. Stone (1826-1890)
Fountain P. Stone "Fountain" (1828-1857)
Nicholas Howard Stone "N.H." (1830-1900)
Sarah Matilda E. Stone Duke "Tild" (1832-1868)
Alexander G. Stone "Alec" (1834-1878)
James Thomas Stone "Tommy" (1837-1859)
The following person was the Methodist minister who presided at the funerals mentioned in the letter. His son Jessie Evans had married Elizabeth Ann Luton whose grandfather William W. Stone was a brother to the father, Nicholas Stone, of above.
Cornelius Evans "Neely" (1790-1872)
Particularly interesting is the mention of "the old graveyard". Today, this cemetery is the Stone-Baulch Cemetery which is north of Gallatin, Tennessee. The letter mentions that Tommy wanted to be buried by Fountain who was by Frankey and Mother and Father and our Grandparent. This is exactly how the graves are today. The headstones face east: Fountain and the others are just south of Tommy in the order mentioned in the letter. The Grandparent is Kezziah A. ? who is just north of her husband Stephen Stone, Sr.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
December the third 1859, N. H. Stone to J. H. Stone and family.
"Dear brother, I am blessed with an opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that we are not well but alive, some of us yet.
I will say that our sister Polly died on Monday morning about four o'clock on the seventh day of November and was buried on the next day at eleven by her husband at the old graveyard.
And again I will say that our brother Tommy died on the next Monday evening at seven o'clock on the fourteenth day of November and was buried on the next day at three o'clock in the evening. We had his and Polly's funerals preached by old Uncle Neely Evans at the old place before Tommy was buried.
This was a very sad time indeed losing sister and brother in one weeks time and having the funerals preached by an old friend who had known them both all of their lives and talked of them as though there was no doubt but that they were in a better world.
Tommy said several days before his death, that he was ready to die and told where he wanted to be buried. He wanted to be buried by Fountain, so he was, and Fountain is by Frankey and Father and Mother and our Grandparent all together.
Tommy's leg had commenced mortifying and the doctors concluded that it would be the best to cut it off as all knew that he could not live as he was. So they cut it off Saturday about noon and he died on the next Monday night.
Polly died with the same complaint as you have heard before. She had a new doctor and he was seemingly a curing her. I was there on Saturday before she died and from what I could see and what she said that she was a mending very fast. She had a chill the next morning and then a fever and that night all went to bed as usual and she coughing along through the night as common. And at four she coughed and still lay on her back and they knew that was not common. So they got up and she could not speak and never spoke any more and died in about an hour. She has left her family, though, almost grown. They have broken up housekeeping and are a going to live and work about, as they can successfully. They will soon marry I think.
Tommy made a will, if the old deed of father's is not broke the most that he had will go to Alec. He gave the rest all 200 dollars each, Stephen 400 dollars, me he gave a small piece of land and the negro boy and so on, Polly he gave 500 dollars. 200 dollars to each one of their...
The neighbors and the kinfolk especially are generally sick and have been since Tommy's death especially those that went to see him and waited on him while he was sick last. We have had something very much like the eracifular though I reckon that it is not that. Soreness and swelling in the throat and limbs, aching and fever and very bad head ache.
I am just getting about and am not able to work any yet though I was worse off than any of the rest. The rest of them are most all well. Some of them that have been lately taken. Tild went to see Tommy once and she is down now though she is getting some better now. Some are not sick more than three or four days and some two or three weeks. I have been sick three weeks or ever since the next day after he was buried.
My father-in-law is very bad off and don't know that he will live. Sophy and her family don't pester themselves much about any of us. Cuza has been very sick for a long time before Tommy died and it was thought among us that she wouldn't live though she is getting up again.
Last night and today is very sleety and windy and cold.
Joseph, write if you feel like as there are some of us alive yet though we don't know how long it will be. I write to you but never get any answer..."

According to the membership roll of Bethpage Methodist Church, Bethpage, Tennessee on August 28, 1861, Compiled by Babe Ruth Carter, Mary E. Hanna was a single woman and a member of this congregation (she would have been 17 years of age at the time). Others with the Hanna family name are listed in this roll as follows:
- Abner L. Hanna, male, married
- Jas. Brice Hanna, male, single
- John R. Hanna, male, single, "Killed in battle at Shilow 6th April 1862 Rest in hope"
- James A. Hanna, male, married
- Mary J. Hanna, female, married
It is presumed that most, if not all, of these five persons were related to Mary Elizabeth Hanna. It is presumed that James A. Hanna and John R. Hanna are the brothers of Mary Elizabeth Hanna also identified in the 1850 census. Mary J. Hanna is the mother of Mary Elizabeth Hanna. Abner L. Hanna is the father of Mary Elizabeth Hanna. Jas. Brice Hanna is presumed to be the uncle of Mary Elizabeth Hanna identified as Bryson Hanner in the 1850 census.

According to Bethpage Methodist Church History compiled by Babe Ruth Carter, Typed by Sherry Falcon, Copyright, ©1997, a Rev. John W. Hanna ministered to this congregation. This is her notation, 'A most eloquent preacher, the Rev. John W. Hanna, spent his boyhood in the Bethpage community, coming there from North Carolina. It has been said that when a boy on the farm he was sometimes found standing on a stump and preaching. In some respects he may have been well ahead of his time, for he clearly recognized that the scriptures portray God as female at times. In the June, 1982, issue of The Circuit Rider, Virginia Mollenkott wrote the article, "Feminine Images of God in the Bible". It happened that Dr. Hanna once preached a sermon entitled, "Motherhood of God", Isaiah 66:13.' It is not known how or if Rev. John W. Hanna might be related to this Hanna family.

"Mrs. Bettie Stone, Wife of the Late N. H. Stone, Passes Away.
Mrs. Bettie Stone, wife of the late N. H. Stone, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. N. Baulch, on the Douglas Pike last Friday morning at 3 o'clock. She had been in failing health for several months but was not thought to be in any immediate danger until the day preceding her death. Mrs. Stone was born April 12, 1844, and was a daughter of Lee and Mary Jane Hanna, pioneers of Sumner County, who settled on Bledsoe Creek near Bethpage in the early part of the last century. While yet young she was converted under the preaching of Bro. Ray at Bethpage, and all the remainder of her life was a consistent member of the Methodist Church. She was married to Mr. Stone on May 4th, 1870. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom survive her as follows: Mrs. J. T. Widick, of Robertson County, Mrs. R. W. Lee, Mrs. G. N. Baulch and John R., Abner N., Frank H., and James K. Stone, all of this county. She is survived also by one brother, Dr. J. B. Hanna of Bethpage, and one sister, Mrs. W. T. Holder of Nashville. The death of Mrs. Stone marks the passing from earth to the beautiful beyond of a faithful Christian woman, who held the highest esteem of her neighbors and friends and who was charitable and kind to neighbor and stranger alike. She was especially active in church and Sunday school work of Old Salem Church of which she had been consistent member for 39 years. By this faithful hand of Christian workers she will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted at the church Saturday morning. The interment followed at the Stone Burying Ground."

From an email from Cathey Bruce Roark in February 2002, "We currently have restored the old Zach Brazier house and are planning to move in this week. I just love the history behind these old homes. The Zach Brazier that owned this house had it put there in the 1930's or early 1940's. My grandparents sharecropped his land and lived in the house with him. He was a bachelor. My grandmother cooked and cleaned for him. My dad says that he was a huge man and wore overalls all the time. He was so large that it was hard for him to get around. ... We are not related to the Braziers . We just were all raised in the area. My dad owns the old farm now where he grew up along with the Old Nimmo place."

Dear Uncle Willy:-They tell me that without my knowledge you have lain six months in your cold bed of clay, beneath the old wild cherry tree, which for fifty years has bent its friendly boughs over the cold immaculate forms of our loved ones. I knew that someday you would have to lay there, too. I knew that I would not always visit my old home and find you to greet me, and yet I was not prepared for this sad news, and oh, how hard to give you up-all the father that I ever knew-being bereft of my own dear parent in my early childhood, and it was you, dear Uncle, and old Grandmother, that took our widowed mother and us five little ones to your quiet hearthstone and supplied our many wants until we grew to man and womanhood, and all we could ever give you in return for your kindness was love and respect. Now, all that we can do is to mourn with your bereaved companion and children, who miss you sadly. I hoped to meet you again on earth, but God's will be done. I hope we will meet in Heaven. W. A. B., St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 9, 1877."

He was born June 14, 1838 in Sumner Co., TN, and died October 26, 1898 in Robertson Co., TN.

Information from 1850 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Seventh Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Microfilm M432, Roll 897, DIstrict 11, Microfilm Page number 280 lists Martha but lists her age as 7 putting her birth at about 1843 as opposed to 1846. Note that this census spells her last name as Balch, but incorrect spellings are common in these records.
The Sumner County Court Record of their marriage is Microfilm Number 0969843-0969869, where it lists "Balch, Martha" being married to "Holly, W. H." on October 6, 1867.

27. MATILDA JANE3 BAULCH (SOPHIA2 STONE, NICHOLAS1, STEPHENA, WILLIAMB, JOHNC, RICHARDD, NICHOLASE) was born January 31, 1850 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN, and died July 12, 1921 in Douglas Pike, Sumner Co., TN. She married WILLIAM H. LINDSEY March 01, 1874 in Sumner Co., TN, son of ? LINDSEY and ADALINE ?. He was born Bet. 1845 - 1846 in Sumner Co., TN, and died Bef. 1900.
Notes for MATILDA JANE BAULCH:
In the 1850 Census of Sumner County, Tennessee; Seventh Census of the United States, Tennessee, Sumner County, Microfilm M432, Roll 897, DIstrict 11, Microfilm Page number 280, taken October 28, 1850 lists a John at age 1. There is no John Balch born 1849-1850 listed in the family bible, but there IS Matilda Jane listed as being born in January 1850. It is logical to assume that the census taker made an error in listing Jane as John in the 1850 census.
In the 1880 Census, Jane Lindsay is listed as married with two children but living with her parents, John and Sophia Balch.
In the 1900 Census, Jane Linzy (sic, Lindsey) is listed as widowed and daughter, Fannie, is living with her. She lists the birthplace of father, John R. Baulch, as Kentucky.
In the 1920 Census, Matilda J. Lindsey is listed as widowed and living with daughter, Fannie, and her husband, Edward J. Fuqua.
The death certificate for Matilda Jane Baulch Lindsey was recorded in 1921 in Sumner County, Tennessee, certificate number 156. She is listed as Female, White, and Widowed. Her birth is listed as 1/31/1850. Her death is recorded as 7/12/1921 at age 71 years, five months, and 11 days. Her father is listed as John Baulch, born in KY; her mother is listed as Stone, born in TN. Dr. Homer Reese recorded her death as caused by arterio sclerosis. She is listed as buried in Salem Graveyard on 7/13/1921.

28. JOSEPH ASBURY3 BAULCH (SOPHIA2 STONE, NICHOLAS1, STEPHENA, WILLIAMB, JOHNC, RICHARDD, NICHOLASE) was born May 01, 1855 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN, and died November 11, 1917 in OK. He married FANNIE ZINK January 25, 1883 in Texas. She was born January 15, 1862 in Texas, and died January 25, 1899 in Oklahoma Territory.
Notes for JOSEPH ASBURY BAULCH:
In the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Census recorded for Ottawa County, Oklahoma, there is a Joseph H. Baulch married to an Ada A. Given the rarity of the Baulch name, it is an unusual coincidence. The age of Joseph H. Baulch recorded in this census data would match Joseph Asbury Baulch. He reports that he was born in Arkansas but that his parents were from Tennessee. Since the Baulches were all from Tennessee, this is another fact that leads one to believe that there is a connection here. To add to the confusion, no other Joseph Baulch can be found in the 1910 census index.
Children of JOSEPH BAULCH and FANNIE ZINK are:
i. ARTHUR4 BAULCH, b. December 27, 1883, Texas; d. September 03, 1955; m. (1) JESSIE MYRTLE DIXON, January 01, 1906, Britton, OK; b. March 23, 1886, Arkansas; d. October 03, 1914; m. (2) HATTIE MAE PERRY, December 31, 1918, Oklahoma City, OK; b. September 04, 1883.

More About J. MARTIN JERNIGAN:
Burial: Stone-Baulch Cemetery, Sumner Co., TN
Notes for MATTIE F. ALDRIDGE:
The burial place of Mattie Aldridge Jernigan is not certain. Her husband, J. Martin Jernigan, is buried in the Stone-Baulch Cemetery in Sumner County, Tennessee in 1899 with a double headstone identifying Mattie A. with only a birth year recorded. It is presumed that this inscription was done when J. Martin Jernigan's tombstone was created. The Tennessee death certificate record for Mattie A. Jernigan is in Volume 55, certificate number 65 and lists her death as 2/20/1919 in Sumner County. Her burial location is listed as the Jernigan Cemetery in Sumner County. There is no tombstone for a Mattie A. Jernigan in the Jernigan Cemetery, but there is a tombstone for a Mrs. Mattie Huffines, born 7/9/1854 and died 2/20/1919. However, this Mattie is also listed in this graveyard with a daughter, Elisha Almar Huffines who was born in 1888 when Mattie A. Jernigan had daughter Annie Lee Jernigan. Nonetheless, the coincidence in death date is most interesting.

Peryle lived the last years of her life in McKindree Manor, Hermitage, Tennessee. December 02, 1909, near Westmoreland, Sumner Co., TN; d. September 30, 2004, T. J. Samson Community Hospital, Glasgow, Barren Co., KY.
Notes for ERNEST FRANKLIN BAULCH:
Raised and schooled in Tennessee. Attended Vanderbilt Divinity and Graduate School, Nashville, Tennessee. An educator at public as well as private schools. Schoolmaster at "Baulch Junior School for Boys" in Park City, Kentucky. Was first a Methodist minister in Petersburg, Tennessee at the Methodist Episcopal Church South. While teaching at Morgan Preparatory School, Petersburg, Tennessee and preaching at a rural church, he was asked to "fill in" at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church that was without a minister. After several months of doing this, the Presbytery said he could not preach regularly there as a Methodist. [See below.] He then was accepted and ordained as a Presbyterian minister. Instructor at Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee. Superintendent of Caverna Independent School District, Kentucky. Director of Summer Head Start Program. Chairman of Inservice Committee. Sgt. of Arms of the Cave City Civitan Club, Kentucky. City Judge, Park City, Kentucky.
In a letter postmarked September 9, 1989 from James H. Baulch (age 74) to Howard S. Baulch:
"... an 'abbreviated' statement as to the answer Ernest [F. Baulch] gave the Presbytery pertaining to their question of his belief in predestination.
When Ernest went before the Presbyterian council in regard to being accepted as a Presbyterian minister since he, as a Methodist minister, was preaching regularly in a Presbyterian church that did not have a minister, the matter of his belief in predestination came up.
His statement to them was that in regard to that question, he would give them two answers and they could then make their decision. He told them that he would give them first the answer that they probably desired which was the one contained in the Presbyterian doctrine and that his second answer would be his own personal belief whereby he did not believe in strict predestination as he did not believe that it was pre-destined as to whether or not he would be accepted by the Presbytery but that he believed that God had a plan for the world and that ultimately God's plan would succeed. He said that he might have received the call to be the minister of that church but that he could refuse the call (someone else would have to accept the call). If he was called to be a Presbyterian minister that his refusal to accept the call at that time did not mean that God would not make the call to him again.
Ernest never had, or never gave me, a copy of his written answer nor was it ever written out in any of his sermons that I had. He used it at times in sermons I heard and also in some meetings I attended during which he elaborated more, however, the main belief is that God's will in an overall viewpoint will be accomplished - God may have a job for Jim Baulch to do but Jim Baulch may not do it; so God will find someone else to hear his call.
I know that I got a lot of my beliefs from my brother as I lived with his [family] for a while, worked in a boarding school with him, and owned and operated a boy's boarding school with him and it is hard for me to explain my own belief on predestination. I know that God's plan for the world will succeed, but I am not that sure that God's plan for Jim Baulch has succeeded. I just pray that one of his alternate plans will succeed. There is no way that I can believe in strict predestination when I look at the happenings in the world in this century or in any of the past nor can I explain Christ's statement that he lost only the one that was so predestined."
At http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/schools/utk/1926volunteer/utkjuniors1926.htm, Ernest is listed in the 1926 Junior Class of the University of Tennessee.

iii. JAMES HOMER BAULCH, b. December 18, 1915, Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN; d. November 24, 1992, Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, LA; m. MADIE GIBSON, April 13, 1940; b. May 14, 1919, Bond, Stone Co., MS.
Notes for JAMES HOMER BAULCH:
The middle name of Homer came from the man who delivered James into this world, Dr. Homer Reese. Raised and schooled in Tennessee, he spent his grammar school years at the Salem School building where he laughingly claimed he "was the smartest one in the eighth grade ... and the only one!" He attended Spartanburg Textile & Industrial Institute (l.k.a. Spartanburg Junior College), University of Tennessee, and Bowling Green College of Commerce. After graduating from college, he became an instructor and business manager at Harrison-Stone-Jackson Agricultural High School and Junior College (l.k.a. Perkinston Junior College), where he met a student, Madie Gibson, who became his wife. He and Madie moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he was a bookkeeper and instructor for Carolina Business College. He later joined his brother, Ernest, as schoolmaster at "Baulch Junior School for Boys" in Park City, Kentucky until 1949. From there they moved to Hopkinsville, Kentucky where he was Business Manager for Hopkinsville Lincoln-Mercury and bookkeeper for Hopkinsville Auto Parts until 1958. He was then recruited by Oak Motors of Nashville, Tennessee to be Assistant Business Manager. In 1959 he was recruited by Jim Burke Buick of Birmingham, Alabama to be Business Manager. In 1964 he followed his doctor's advice to find a less stressful job and moved to Slidell, Louisiana to be Business Manager and part owner of John Brown Olds (later Tom Brown Olds-Buick, Del Williams Motors, and Bill Ward Motors), Slidell, Louisiana until his retirement in 1986 (excepting for a brief return to Birmingham, Alabama to help out Jim Burke Buick in 1971).
James Baulch was received into membership of the Salem Methodist Church, north of Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee in October 1929 by his brother, Rev. Ernest F. Baulch. He remained an active member of the United Methodist Church his entire life, holding numerous positions on its boards and committees and taught an Adult Sunday School Class for over 30 years. He was an ardent believer in maintaining a healthy body, engaging in a variety of exercise programs, particularly those centered around running. He won numerous awards for finishing top in his age group for 10K and 5K runs through age 76. Having been raised on a farm, the "farmer blood" never left him. He maintained a vegetable garden wherever he lived and helped his children establish ones for them.
Largely due to his active life style, he looked and acted younger than his years. He was admired and respected by his friends and family for his physical, mental, and spiritual strength. He was the epitome of reliability: if he promised he would do something, he did it as committed and did it well. While quite introverted, he was a friend to anyone who needed him, often selflessly sacrificing himself in support of others. Friends and family knew they could count on him.
He and his wife, Madie, lived a beautiful fifty-two years together. They were always committed to each other, to their family, to their church, and to their friends. They were both victims of a tragic car accident (being hit broadside by a one-ton truck that ran through an inoperative red light) in May 1992 and were hospitalized for over a month. With two brain hemorrhages and numerous broken bones, recovery was slow and physical therapy was difficult. Six months later, a massive stroke put him in a deep, irreversible coma. With no hope of a functional life, his family followed his often repeated request if such an occasion arose. He was taken home and removed from life support systems. He died on November 24, 1992, two days before Thanksgiving. It was as he would have liked it: he was at home in his own bed, kept warm by the quilt made by his mother that had been a wedding gift to Madie and him, and surrounded by his family. Madie, all three children, and all their spouses were there, singing hymns from the United Methodist Hymnal. It was during his son Howard's singing of "How Great Thou Art" that he breathed his last breath here on earth. His son-in-law, Floyd Duvall, fittingly read the Twenty-Third Psalm as he joined the angels in heaven.
Originally, Jim was placed in a mausoleum in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Slidell, Louisiana. After Madie moved to Franklin, Tennessee in September 1997, he was moved to his final burial place in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville, Tennessee, near his parents and his brother, Nelson Howard Baulch.

Burial: 1997, Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville, TN
HS Education: Raised and schooled in Gallatin, TN
Religion: Methodist
Notes for MADIE GIBSON:
Madie was given the name Maybell at birth, but her sister, Mittie Ruth, could never pronounce it right and called her Madie. Eventually she legally changed her name to Madie and dropped any reference to Maybell. She was raised in Bond, Mississippi and attended Harrison-Stone-Jackson Agricultural High School and Junior College (later known as Perkinston Junior College).
The following is her wedding announcement contained in a local newspaper:
"Mr. Abner Gibson announces the marriage of his daughter Miss Madie Gibson to Mr. James H. Baulch, son of Mr. G. N. Baulch of Gallatin, Tenn. The groom is a graduate of Bowling Green Commercial Law School of Bowling Green, Kentucky and has been bookkeeping instructor and business manager at Perkinston Junior Colege (sic) for two years when he resigned to take a position in Tennessee. The bride is a graduate of Perkinston High School. The young couple left as soon as his work was completed at the Junior College. They will be at his home in Gallatin, Tenn."
Madie was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her children and thirteen grandchildren. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, having held numerous positions on church boards and committees. One of her greatest gifts is her contributions to the Altar Guild and, more directly, the talent she has with the flower arrangements for the church services. When Jim entered semi-retirement, they enjoyed travels to West Germany, Austria, England, Canada, and Brazil. Life was difficult for Madie after Jim died in November 1992. In September 1997 she moved from Slidell, Louisiana to Morningside Assisted Living in Franklin, Tennessee.
