Early settlers John and Nancy Phillips deeded land at this site to the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1880. A small church was built and was dedicated on March 13, 1880, just a day or two before the members of the community put their first soul to rest. The earliest documented burial is that of Bascomb G. Sorrell (recorded as B. G. Sorrell on his tombstone) who died on March 13, 1880. The Methodist church donated the cemetery property to the community in 1940, and in 1962 a cemetery association was formed to maintain the historic graveyard. Phillips Cemetery, as it was known locally, became the official name of the grounds.
On April 24, 2005 Victor Harris Stone, II, visited this cemetery and took photos of selected tombstones. Victor's great-grandfather, Jacob Eusebius Stone and many other Stone and Sorrell relatives are buried here. The transcriptions and tombstone photos are presented below. Comments in parentheses are not on the tombstone and are additional information offered by the author.
This is a very large cemetery. For more more complete listing and history of Phillips Cemetery, I suggest you visit the Hays County Historical Commission web site.
