Hurricane Katrina Recovery at
Slidell First United Methodist Church, Slidell, LA
September 2006
- 9/23/2006 - We drive from Dublin, Ohio to Slidell, Louisiana and get settled in at UMCOR North Shore Disaster Recovery Center.
- 9/24/2006 - We worship at Slidell First United Methodist Church, tour Katrina destruction in Slidell, St. Bernard Parish and Orleans Parish, and visit the French Quarter.
- 9/25/2006 - Work begins at Slidell FUMC where we work to restore an administrative wing by framing out walls and installing windows to replace sliding glass doors, frame out other changed areas and begin to insulate. Dinner is provided at the home of a dear friend and Slidell FUMC parishoner.
- 9/26/2006 - Work continues on the new exterior walls, we begin to hang drywall, and we work on building new kneewalls for exterior windows. Dinner is another Southern treat!
- 9/27/2006 - A lot more drywall is hung in the administrative wing, and we tackle the men's restroom.
- 9/28/2006 - We build stalls for the men's restroom, paint and scrap exterior areas started by a prior mission team, and start work on the handicap restroom.
- 9/29/2006 - We paint more of the church's exterior as well as the new stalls in the men's restroom, we hang drywall in the handicap restroom, and we hang several interior and exterior doors. We get a short tour of the Bayou Liberty area before having our final meal with our most hospitable hosts.
- 9/30/2006 - We make the long drive home.
